When I got laid off last year, we had a career specialist to guide us towards our next position. He drilled it in our head that we should make our passion our career.
One thing he said that rings true in my head now is that we can turn ourselves into an expert on any subject. He suggested writing a blog with content on the subject you want to be considered an expert on. That’s not all though, in order to gain views to that blog, you’d need to go out into the world and comment on other blogs with similar content. It’s not enough just to comment though, your comment must be a contribution to the discussion and you must leave your url behind.
Leaving your url behind is important. There is a good chance that the blog owner will go and check out your blog, but not if you don’t leave your url. Most blog sites will ask for your url. WordPress will leave your url behind if you’re logged in, but only if you set it up that way. It won’t automatically do it. Many thanks to steadycat for bringing that to my attention. To fix it, go into your user section, click your username and put the link to your blog in the box marked website.
Ok, so you’ve got a blog, you’re saying wonderfully intelligent things on other people’s blog and you’re leaving your url behind. What’s next?
Your name. Everything you do online that you want credit for, needs to be under one name. If it’s not, no one will ever know that it’s you writing on 3 or 4 different websites or magazines. When someone googles your name, your presence on the internet should be clear and overwhelming. An example, google Ulla Kelly. I think she writes in her sleep.
If you are like me and have no intention of using your real name, it is time for a pseudonym. This was originally my entire purpose for writing this post, but I got caught up lecturing. My bad…
Use a pseudonym when your name is: common, way too long, difficult to spell, hard to pronounce, generic or contradicts your genre of writing.
Now with all of that said, can you find my pseudonym somewhere on this page?

lol ;p
Yep, I hear that. I usually use the name DJ Blue Light, since that’s my DJ name. However, I do have a published book with my real name which does suck when it comes to writing on my blog because I refuse to use my real name in any of my entries. This then makes it harder for people who visit my blog to learn about me. But another well-received blog by the brown one…superb!
@ulla- you’re a perfect example. google loves you.
@China (or Blue?)- Now I want to read your book! You’re not going to share the title?
Lol…let’s just say both. Email me at dj_bluelight7 at yahoo dot com for the title:-D
for years i only had my name on sorta formally published work, not on my blog/s … then i got older and thought fuckit … i’m gonna die one day and prob no-one much will remember anyway, because we’re all wormfood … so i’ll go out yellin
either that, or i’m just a shameless attention whore
incidentally, the personal blog’s at http://dialupvr00m.wordpress.com
@blue- it’s in your inbox.
@ulla- I wouldn’t call you a whore. I’d have to check out your personal blog first, lol
evil eeeeeeeevil abg!!! lolol
So that’s my problem. I know to much about a whole bunch of stuff, and I am not consistent in how it is put out there. Ulla Kelly was a good example. I share my name with a minister. Should I keep using my name or come up with a pseudonym and change everything accordingly?
@Tamara- If she’s more well known than you are, I think it’s a good idea to make sure people don’t confuse you two. If you don’t want to abandon your whole name, maybe shorten your first name or add a middle initial?
i love tamara. that’s the first time i have ever been called a good example *grin*
I’d prefer to go by Deepdiva. It’s on my blog and myspace and twitter and some other places, but I think there’s another Deepdiva somewhere in Philadelphia. But I love my psuedonym. And my real name is so uncommon (not ghetto) that if someone looked me up, I’d be known.
Any suggestions, ABG?
You obviously already have a presence on the internet as Deepdiva. Everything you have is in that name, right? I googled you. From what I can tell you’ve got the title on lock. It would be silly to compromise something that is already established. What you should do depends on what your ultimate goals are.
You could look at Deepdiva as just the title of your blog. You would be the author and the author needs a name. All you would have to do is add your name (the one you would choose, not your real name) to any other page on your blog. It would make sense to use it on your “Who is Deepdiva?” page as kinda like an introduction. That way when someone googled your new name, it would automatically come up tied to your blog!
This is a good post. I’m still trying to figure out to make blogging make me $$$. I’ve read a few articles on top blogs that make top dollars and how they do it. So I’m learning. The name thing is also very important. Like with me I always use my first and last name but, sometimes it’s kind of weird using my real name on social networking sites.
@abg — she is pretty well known, I have added my middle initial before…or i can go by my first and middle name… yeah i like that.
@glennisha — I’ve used adsence, you get money when people click on your ads in your blog, only thing is, you can’t lead people to the ad…they just have to want to click, i believe you can do it to your rss feed as well.
@ ulla
@Glennis- I hate that my facebook has my real name on it. I feel like it tricked me when I signed up, lol.
@Tamara- Using your first and middle name is a great idea!
Thanks for the advice. Never looked at it in that aspect. So I guess I’ll be sticking to the name poeticstud. And this maybe off topic but talk about laid off I just got laid off at my smh, but once again keep doing what your doing.
Anytime Poetic!
